Welcome to the Waverley Community Men’s Shed

The Men’s Shed is a place where members with a range of skills and experiences can come together to nurture their woodworking skills, exchange ideas, discuss their experiences and get involved in community projects.

Members can work on their own projects, help others with their projects or support charities by making furniture, toys or other useful items.

Members have access to an extensive range of woodworking tools and equipment.  It is not necessary for new shed members to have prior experience as there are many members with many years of experience who are happy to mentor and guide the inexperienced.   Inexperienced members will be guided and supervised by senior members, who have themselves been certified to use some of the larger pieces of equipment.  This ensures that the use of shed equipment is conducted safely and efficiently.

If you are interested in joining the Waverley Community Men’s Shed, please contact secretary@waverleycommunitymensshed.org.au

Article: Wentworth Courier Photos: John AppleyardA men’s shed in Sydney’s east will accept women as members in an attempt to secure a home for the organization and improve their operations. The members of Waverley Men’s Shed on Thursday unanimously voted to amend their constitution to allow women to join. Plans are underway for the club, which is currently open three days each week, to reserve two days for men while Wednesdays will allow female members to attend. The group’s president, Peter Charlton, said the shed has had limited opening days due to a lack of supervisors, a problem he hoped to solve by expanding membership and training women.“We’ve got expensive and dangerous equipment in there and we can’t have people using it if we don’t have supervisors,” he said.“I can train some women to be supervisors and then have women’s days on Thursday and Friday.”To invite women into the group, the shed is set to put on a six-day course covering the fundamentals of woodworking. The program will begin with safety training and culminate with completing a project.Mr Charlton said plans for the change had been in place for two months, and will give women “a marvellous opportunity to do things they haven’t done before”.“I think women are going to have a wonderful time making things,” he told this masthead.Mr Charlton also hoped the inclusion of women into the group would improve their chances at securing federal funding, as the Men’s Shed is currently under threat of being without a home as a $500 million development of Waverley Estate retirement home pushes them out. Waverley Men’s Shed is the only organization of its kind in the city’s southeast or eastern suburbs.Patron of the Waverley Men’s Shed, Coogee state Labor MP Marjorie O’Neill, said men’s sheds “have played a vital role in supporting mental health and social connection across our community”.“By opening their doors more broadly, the Waverley Men’s Shed is expanding that positive impact and ensuring even more people can benefit from the camaraderie, skills-sharing and sense of purpose the shed provides,” she said.“What makes this particularly meaningful is that the decision was made by members themselves. That speaks to a thoughtful, respectful conversation within the Shed about how best to serve their community into the future.”Waverley Men’s Shed provides a place for older people to find support and connection in their retirement and is located behind the Uniting War Memorial Hospital, a building set to be turned into residential aged care for more than 300 people.Mr Charlton said he expected the group would be left without a shed “within 18 months”.“Uniting have been planning (development) for eight years, we have been looking for seven and a half years with no luck yet.”Costs of operating the shed are covered by Uniting, but if they temporarily move off-site, the Men’s Shed will have to seek external funding.A spokesman for Uniting recently said the men’s shed would need a temporary home while construction takes place, but it will return to a new, purpose-built space at the Uniting Waverley Estate once the redevelopment is complete.State and federal parliamentarians have also previously confirmed they are working closely with the shed to find a suitable site.Waverley CouncilMarjorie O’Neill - Member for CoogeeCommunity Bank ClovellyMaroubra CommunityDylan Parker - Mayor of Randwick@followers ... Social Friday

One of the most enjoyable things we do (although I think it is THE MOST enjoyable), is to
gather daily at the Shed and have lunch together. These lunches are limited by time as
many members want to go back to their project.
I have floated the idea around with some members, and we have decided to start an un-
timed luncheon on the last Friday of each month at Maroubra Seals.
